Labor Ministry warns against sacking Lebanese for foreigners

Companies have two weeks to request work permits for their foreign workers, or risk facing punitive measures, the Labor Ministry announced Monday, warning against laying off Lebanese to replace them with low-paid foreigners.

In a statement, the ministry called for an end to “the sacking of Lebanese employees and workers to replace them with foreigners, including Syrians.”

It cited an increasing number of complaints by Lebanese workers who said they were being fired and replaced with low-cost labor, while the unemployment rate of Lebanese remains at around 25 percent.
