THE STORY
In 2016, at just 15 years old, Mekdes Belayneh arrived in Lebanon from Ethiopia to earn a living and to change her life. She was employed by Tony Reaidy to work for him and his son Elias Reaidy.
Mekdes says of her time working:
“The employer would beat me. I have never met someone like this”
Tony Reaidy owns a castle, a duplex and shops, and Mekdes was responsible for cleaning all of these. She was required to work around 18 hours a day, from early morning to late evening. Throughout the 4 years that Mekdes worked for Tony, she never had a day off.
As Mekdes’ third year was coming to an end, Tony told Mekdes that she could not return to Ethiopia because of the COVID restrictions and the airport closure. However, it seems that although Tony is wealthy, it was his plan to make Mekdes work that year for free. Whenever she asked about her salary, he would tell her that he had no ready cash. He made his income through his property investments in London and he told Mekdes that he would pay her once he went to London. However, he confessed to a family member that he had no intention of paying her. He said that she did not deserve it or that she had to work harder, even though she was already overworked. If Mekdes travelled back to Ethiopia, he would aim to lose contact with her, and thus avoid paying her the hard-earned salary. Between August 2019 and August 2020 she received no payment. The salary owed to her for that period was $2,400.
Tony is described as manipulative and extremely dangerous. Mekdes lived in fear. Tony often lost his temper and would physically abuse her during her third year of working for him.
Tony’s family have spoken with This Is Lebanon and confirmed that he beat Mekdes on 4 or 5 separate occasions. They recall him hitting her because a painting was not centered, even lifting her by her ears, and physically abusing her while she was screaming. This is Y, Tony's daughter, telling Mekdes to talk about the physical abuse she suffered:
“I’m going to beat the shit out of you till you die!” Tony’s given reason for the physical abuse was, “When you hit them, they know how to work properly.”
Mekdes had no freedom and was constantly harassed. Her phone was regularly confiscated and inspected. She was not allowed to speak on the phone and was told that the phone was being monitored.
After 4 years of working for Tony and his family, Mekdes was sent back to Ethiopia with the promise from Tony that she would receive the money owed at a later date. Once home, she begged him to pay her remaining salary but he threatened her, made excuses or didn't respond. Eventually he blocked her number so she could not contact him.
It has been over a year since Mekdes returned to Ethiopia. Tony Reaidy claims he doesn’t owe her any money.

في عام 2016، وصلت إلى لبنان مِقدِس بيلاينِه، البالغة من العمر 15 عاماً فقط، من إثيوبيا لكسب لقمة العيش وتغيير حياتها. تم توظيفها من قبل طوني رعيدي للعمل لديه ولدى ابنه الياس رعيدي.
تقول مِقدِس عن المدة التي عملت فيها:
"كان صاحب العمل يضربني. لم أقابل أحداً مثله من قبل."
يمتلك طوني رعيدي قلعة ومنزلاً من طابقين ومتاجر، وكانت مِقدِس مسؤولة عن تنظيفها كلها. كان يتعين عليها العمل حوالي 18 ساعة في اليوم، من الصباح الباكر حتى وقت متأخر من المساء. طوال السنوات الأربع التي عملت فيها مِقدِس لدى طوني، لم تحصل على يوم عطلة أبداً.
مع اقتراب انتهاء عقد مِقدِس لمدة 3 سنوات، أخبرها طوني بأنها لا تستطيع العودة إلى إثيوبيا نظراً للقيود المفروضة بسبب كوفيد وإغلاق المطار. إلا أنه، يبدو وبالرغم من ثراء طوني، أن خطته كانت إجبار مِقدِس على العمل مجاناً في ذلك العام. كلما سألت عن راتبها، كان يخبرها أنه ليس لديه أموال نقداً. لقد كسب دخله من استثماراته العقارية في لندن وأخبر مِقدِس أنه سيدفع لها بمجرد ذهابه إلى لندن. ومع ذلك، فقد اعترف لأحد أفراد أسرته بأنه لم يكن ينوي أن يدفع لها، لكنه شعر بأنه يحق له التمنّع عن دفع أجورها. قال بأنها لا تستحقها أو أنه كان عليها أن تجتهد بالعمل أكثر، رغم أنها كانت تعمل فوق طاقتها أصلاً. في حال عادت مِقدِس إلى إثيوبيا، كان ينوي أن يقطع الاتصال بها، وهكذا يتجنب دفع راتبها الذي حصلت عليه بشق النفس. بين آب 2019 وآب 2020، لم تستلم أية تحويلات مالية. وتبلغ قيمة مستحقاتها المالية 2400 دولار.
طوني مخادع وخطير للغاية. عاشت مِقدِس في خوف. غالباً ما كان طوني يفقد أعصابه ويعنّفها جسدياً مراراً أثناء عملها لديه في السنة الثالثة.
تحدثت عائلة طوني مع "هذا لبنان" وأكدوا أنه ضرب مِقدِس في أربع أو خمس مواقف منفصلة. يتذكرون أنه ضربها لأن اللوحة كانت مائلة، حتى أنه رفعها من أذنيها، وآذاها جسدياً بينما كانت تصرخ.
لقد شاهد أحد أفراد عائلة طوني وهو يقول لمِقدِس: "سأضربك حتى الموت!" كانت ذريعة طوني للتعنيف الجسدي بأنه "حين تضربهن، يعرفن كيفية العمل كما ينبغي."

لم تكن مِقدِس حرة وكانت تتعرض للمضايقات باستمرار. لقد حدد لها أوقات استخدام هاتفها بحيث لم يُسمح لها باستعماله إلا بعد الساعة 6 مساءً. وكان يصادر هاتفها ويفتشه باستمرار. لم يُسمح لها بالتحدث على الهاتف وقيل لها إنها تخضع للمراقبة.
بعد أربع سنوات من العمل مع طوني وعائلته، تم خداع مِقدِس للعودة إلى إثيوبيا. أخبرها طوني أنها ستتلقى مستحقاتها المالية في وقت لاحق. كانت تتوسل إليه أن يدفع لها ما تبقّى من رواتبها لكنه كان يهددها أو يختلق الأعذار أو لا يرد. في النهاية حظر رقمها كي لا تتمكن من الاتصال به. لقد مر أكثر من عام منذ عودة مِقدِس إلى إثيوبيا. ويدّعي طوني رعيدي أنه لا يدين لها بأي فلس.
