THE STORY
In August 2020, Abigael Modupe Adebowale, a 28 year old Nigerian domestic worker in the house of Nicolas and Nada Daoud, Bsalim, contacted This Is Lebanon informing us that her employers had not paid her for 4 months. When she told the Daouds she wanted to leave, they took her to the recruitment agency, Majesty Services in Zalka. Abigael told This is Lebanon that the agent grabbed her by the neck and was hitting her with a wooden stick. She said the agent threatened to kill her if she spoke again about returning to Nigeria. She was then returned to her employers. This is Lebanon has documente hundreds of cases over the years where agents physically abuse workers who request to return home.
Abigael expressed fear of her agent and fear of her employer. She said that Nicolas had physically abused her:
“Even Nicolas has knocked me on my head.”
She was in a difficult position as she claimed that whenever she asked for her salary they told her they couldn’t pay all her money.
On 9 September 2020, This Is Lebanon called Nicolas who informed us that Abigael would be leaving the following day and had been paid in full. Once Abigael was home, she informed us that she was still owed 4 months’ salary. We contacted Nicolas and told him of Abigael’s complaint of non-payment asking him to send pics of the receipts if he disputed her claim.
In his response, he asked This is Lebanon to explain who we are and to provide proof of identity. He claimed that Abigael had been treated as one of his family and claimed again to have paid Abigael her due salary, partly in cash. Although he said he has evidence of payment, he did not produce it. Finally he said, 'We are not obliged to prove to you. We don't know who you are.' He also mentioned that they had paid recruitment costs based on a 2 year contract which she had breached. We pointed out that they, not Abigael, had breached the contract which states that a worker is free to leave if she hasn’t been paid, or has been underpaid, for 3 or more consecutive months.
This Is Lebanon is often told by abusive employers that they treated their domestic worker like a member of the family. The statement in itself is a red flag. Abigael’s response:
“They punished, starved and beat me. They don't treat me as a family member.”
The Daouds is yet another family that never presented This Is Lebanon with any evidence of payment nor did they pay Abigael her 4 months’ salary.

في آب 2020، اتصلت أبيغايل مودوبي أديبوالي بجمعية "هذا لبنان"، وهي عاملة منزل نيجيرية في منزل نيكولا وندى داود، بصاليم، وتبلغ من العمر 28 عاماً، لتخبرنا أن أصحاب العمل لم يدفعوا لها أجورها منذ 4 أشهر. عندما أخبرت عائلة داود أنها تريد المغادرة، أخذوها إلى وكالة التوظيف Majesty Services في الزلقا. أخبرت أبيغايل جمعية "هذا لبنان" ان الوكيل قام بإمساكها حول عنقها وضربها بعصا خشبية. قالت ان الوكيل هدد بقتلها إذا تحدثت مرة أخرى عن العودة إلى نيجيريا. ثم أعيدت إلى أصحاب العمل. لقد وثقت جمعية "هذا لبنان" مئات الحالات على مر السنين حيث قام الوكلاء بالاعتداء الجسدي على العمال الذين يطلبون العودة إلى ديارهم.
أعربت أبيغايل عن خوفها من وكيلها وخوفها من صاحب العمل. وقالت إن نيكولاس عنّفها جسدياً:
"حتى نيكولاس ضربني على رأسي"
كانت في موقف صعب حيث قالت أنها كلما طلبت راتبها كانوا يقولون لها إنهم لا يستطيعون دفع كل مستحقاتها.
في 9 أيلول 2020، اتصل "هذا لبنان" بنيكولا. وعلم منه أن أبيغايل ستغادر في اليوم التالي وأنها تقاضت أجورها بالكامل. وحال وصول أبيغايل إلى بلدها، اتصلت بنا لتخبرنا أنهم ما زالوا يدينون لها برواتب 4 أشهر. كتبنا رسالة نصية إلى نيكولا وأخبرناه بشكوى أبيغايل بخصوص عدم الدفع، وطلبنا منه إرسال صور الإيصالات إن كان يعارض ادّعاءها.
وفي ردّه على ذلك، طلب من "هذا لبنان" أن نبيّن له من نحن ونقدم دليلاً على هويتنا. ادعى أنه لم يكذب، لكن أبيغايل نالت معاملة فرد من عائلته. وادعى مرة أخرى أنه دفع لأبيغايل راتبها المستحَق، جزء منه نقداً. على الرغم من أنه قال بأن لديه أدلة على الدفع، إلا أنه لم يقدمها. وأخيراً قال: "لسنا مضطرين لأن نثبت لكِ. نحن لا نعرف من أنت". وذكرت أيضاً أنهم قد دفعوا تكاليف التوظيف بناءً على عقد مدته سنتان والذي انتهكته. أشرنا إلى أنهم، وليس أبيغايل، قد خرقوا العقد الذي ينص على أن للعاملة حرية المغادرة إن لم تحصل على أجرها، أو إذا كانت تتقاضى أجراً قليلاً مدة 3 أشهر متتالية أو أكثر.
كثيراً ما يُخبر أصحاب العمل المعتدون "هذا لبنان" أنهم يعاملون عاملة المنزل كأحد أفراد الأسرة. العبارة في حد ذاتها هي بمثابة تحذير لنا. وكان ردّ أبيغايل:
"لقد عاقبوني وجوّعوني وضربوني. إنهم لا يعاملونني كأحد أفراد الأسرة."
عائلة داود هي عائلة أخرى لم تقدم أبدًا أي دليل على هذا هو لبنان ، ولم يدفعوا لأبيجيل راتبها البالغ 4 أشهر.
