THE STORY
Jane* is a 22-year-old Nigerian nursing graduate. Her family sold some of their property to raise the necessary funds for her to work abroad. Jane wrote:
“I didn't know that I was going to Lebanon to be a maid.”
She thought she was sent on a program to study and practice nursing. A large number of migrants recruited to work in Lebanon are often unaware of the work and the conditions they are signing on to. She arrived in Lebanon in November 2019 around the beginning of the political and economic crisis, unaware that she was about to be trapped by the Kafala system.
Jane was hired by Norma Mostafa to take care of her elderly parents. Although the regulations of the Labour Ministry state that a worker is to work in one house only, Jane cleaned three houses: Norma's house and those of her parents and sister.
In her testimony to This is Lebanon, Jane told us that she initially thought she would be safe with Norma’s old parents, but she later described them as ‘wicked’. Jane tells us of instances where the wife used to scare her with a knife. She also reported that the old man, Mustafa, who was in his mid 70s, started to sexually harass her. The harassment escalated and ended in an attempted rape. She wrote,
“He almost killed me because he wanted to rape me.”
After physically wrestling with him, she managed to free herself. She was terrified and managed to escape on 20 September 2020. This is Lebanon have reviewed a voice recording of the attempted rape and a picture of Mustafa reaching for Jane’s breasts. On top of the sexual assault, Jane was not regularly paid, and when she ran away they owed her four and half a months’ salary, amounting to $900.
The Nigerian embassy contacted Norma on behalf of Jane, who handed over Jane’s confiscated passport and paid $600 of her salary, but refused to pay for her air ticket.
This Is Lebanon bought Jane’s ticket, and she flew home on 16 October 2020. Jane’s experience in Lebanon was eleven months of fear, exhaustion, and suffering.

وبعد مصارعته جسدياً، تمكنَت من الإفلات منه. شعرت بالذعر، وتمكنت من الفرار في 20 أيلول 2020. قامت جمعية "هذا لبنان" بمراجعة تسجيلا صوتيا لمحاولة الاغتصاب وصورة لمصطفى وهو يصل إلى ثدي جين. علاوة على الاعتداء الجنسي ، لم تتقاضى جين أجرًا منتظمًا ، وعندما هربت كانوا يدينون لها برواتب أربعة أشهر ونصف الشهر - 900 دولار.
اتصلت السفارة النيجيرية بنورما نيابة عن جين، التي سلمت جواز سفر جين بعد أن كانت قد صادرته منها بشكل غير قانوني ودفعت 600 دولار من راتبها، لكنها رفضت دفع ثمن تذكرة سفرها.
