Watch Kamaru speak about her experience working in Noah Zaiter's house.

THE STORY

When Kamaru Abujebar from Ethiopia arrived in Lebanon in 2017 to work as a domestic worker she was only 16. Driven by poverty and a desperate desire to help her family, she traveled abroad, not knowing that she would end up in one of the most notorious houses in Lebanon.

Kamaru’s employers were Noah Zaiter, and his wife, Samira Hussein Al-Haj. Noah is one of the biggest drug and arms dealers not only in Lebanon but in the whole Middle East. He works under the umbrella of Hezbollah, and is always surrounded by armed bodyguards. He is wanted by Interpol and according to dailymail.co.uk, “Lebanon’s cannabis king - is wanted on 4,000 charges.”

On his social media profile, Noah Zaiter portrays himself as a sincere Muslim and a charitable man who cares about the poor, but he denied Kamaru her 19 months’ salary. She asked to be paid monthly but was told she would be given her full salary before departure. Requests for salary merely resulted in beatings. She was also kept undocumented.

Noah leads a luxurious life, but behind the walls of his big villa, he is a violent man. Kamaru sent photographs of broken glass in the house as the result of a fight.

As well as cleaning the large mansion, Kamaru was obliged to respond constantly and repeatedly to trivial demands made by all the family members: a glass of milk in the early hours of the morning, an arghileh... Even 11-year-old Givara would hit and insult her in front of his parents, who did nothing to stop him. She could not even take a shower in peace.

She called her Lebanese agency, Al Hassan for Trade and Services, but they didn’t help her.

She contacted This Is Lebanon on 10 March 2020 terrified, depressed, pale, weak and thin. She was overworked and given inadequate food. She sent pictures of her burnt hands and complained about a bleeding nose. Her employers had denied her medical treatment. Moreover, she had not been paid for 19 months and was desperate to leave the house. Escape was considered but thought to be too dangerous, since Noah had threatened to shoot her. Sobbing, she told This Is Lebanon:

I swear by God I have gone crazy. If I die, no one cares. I have lost my mind.”

Finally, on 30 July 2020, Kamaru sent a voice message saying that she had managed to run away from her employers to Beirut and had found refuge with other Ethiopians. She was repatriated on 27 April 2021, after a long period of waiting for her papers to be completed. This Is Lebanon supported her during that time, and paid for her ticket.

Once Kamaru had left the country, This Is Lebanon  contacted Noah Zaiter to hear his side of the story and ask for Kamaru’s salary. He threatened to sue us. We considered this a rather ridiculous threat given that he is wanted by Interpol. We did offer to meet him on the courtroom steps but he declined. Despite his huge financial resources, Noah refused to pay his domestic worker. His refusal is another crime to add to the long list.
