THE STORY

Chizoba Miracle Ubaka, aged 22, a Nigerian national, contacted This Is Lebanon in September, 2020, concerned because she hadn’t been paid for almost 4 months. She said she was stressed and sick from overwork as she was working not only in the Baalbek house of her employer, Hassan Mortada, but also in his clothing shop in the mall. She claimed she was working ‘without rest’ and the only time she stopped was when she went to bed late at night. She wrote,

“2 days ago the man beat me bcos I said I don't want to work anymore. The other girls who work in the mall sit and rest if there's no work or customers in the mall but when I try to rest a little, the next thing I'll hear is my name.”

As well as working in their house and clothing shop, she claims, “they also take me to madam’s mother's house to work. When I go there she will make me work, work, work without rest and when I come back home late at night I will still work in the house before I sleep. I’m tired, no time to shower or even brush my teeth. All the time is hurry up hurry up.”

In early October, Chizoba escaped her employer’s house and made it to Beirut where we were able to accommodate her in a safe house. She was entitled to leave as according to the Ministry of Labour “you can terminate your contract with your employer if your salary is not paid or underpaid for a period of 3 consecutive months.” On 25 October, she flew back to Nigeria on a ticket purchased by This Is Lebanon. She wrote,

“I'm back home. Thank you so so much. I don't know how it would have been if you didn't help me. Although I’ve been trying to recover from body pains. I’ve been on treatment since I came back but I know God will heal me. My boss gave me a heavy slap before I ran and it has affected my ear and hearing.”

We contacted Hassan requesting Chizoba’s 4 months’ unpaid salary. She worked for him from 26/1/20 to 4/10/20 - just over 8 months. She had received $800 (4 months’ salary). Hassan replied, “If you want to spread the truth, you must know that I gave her her full salary and I have a copy of the money being transferred to her family and when she ran way from the house she lost an amount of money. I gave her a mobile gift and I was treating her very well and when she asked to travel, she agreed with her about everything, but she ran away without telling us and I have a video that shows the moment she left the house. I have reported her to the police.”

He sent a pic of the OMT receipt for $800. We replied, “She worked for you for 8 months. You bought her a phone worth $100 from her salary and paid her $800. Where is the rest?” We also asked him to return her illegally-confiscated passport to the Nigerian embassy. He did not reply. Therefore, with Chizoba’s permission, we are posting her story.
