THE STORY

Now that Mavis Aduhene is safely out of Lebanon, she has given us permission to share her story.

Before arriving in Lebanon in August 2019, 25-year-old Mavis had been working as a domestic worker, but in her home country, Ghana. The salary was very low - about $30 per month - so when she was told she could travel to Lebanon and earn $200 per month it seemed like a great opportunity. The recruiter told her employers would give her whatever she needed and treat her very well. Mavis gathered with difficulty the $600 requested by the recruiter (nearly 2 years’ salary) and headed to Lebanon.

On arrival, she found she had been assigned to Georges Khalaf, a lawyer with close connections to politicians. His wife, Pascale Abou Diwan, is a dietician and nutritionist. They have 5-year-old twins. Mavis told This is Lebanon of the harsh working conditions she faced in the Khalaf-Diwan household: “There was very little food to eat and I was hungry.

In the morning, bread, in the afternoon, bread, and when I was going to sleep, bread. No cheese to put on it. Just bread and sometimes a potato.

If I drank two glasses of water a day, she would tell me I have to reduce it.”

In addition, Mavis said that they would not give her toothpaste and when she asked for medicine for cuts to her hands caused by the harsh cleaning detergents, she was told she had come to a house, not a pharmacy. Often she would wake at 6am and not sleep till after midnight, in breach of the conditions set out in the unified standard contract. Marvis further told us  she was often subjected to threats and insults from Pascale. She was prepared to endure these difficult work conditions; what she couldn’t endure was not being paid. After working there for almost 10 months, she had only received 3 months’ salary. She informed us that every time she asked for her salary, she was told there were no dollars in Lebanon and the banks were closed - a common excuse by employers since the worsening of the economic situation in Lebanon. Not knowing who to turn to, she decided to run to the police station, but like many domestic workers who seek help from the police, she ended up disappointed. She was told to return to the employers’ house and they would come later to help her. The police failed to show up.

Angry that Mavis had tried to seek help from the police, Pascale took her back to the agency. Georges met them there and, drawing on his legal expertise, drew up a document stating that Mavis had received her full salary and insisted that she sign it.

“Under pressure, Mavis signed.”

After 20 days at the office, Mavis was assigned to a new employer where she worked for a year. During this time, This Is Lebanon tried to negotiate with Georges for Mavis’ 7 months’ unpaid salary. Georges wrote, “Mavis signed a paper stating that she had received all her rights.” He told our negotiator that he had “some” OMT receipts and promised to send pictures of those and the paper Mavis signed. He failed to send either.

Partners referred the case to a debt collection agency which spoke with Georges. Georges tried to negotiate a reduction to the amount of payment, writing “I accept to give her a bonus or a help of $500”. Mavis agreed to the reduced figure in lieu of the $1400 he owed, but even this he did not pay.

When sent the article and given an opportunity to comment, Georges replied, “I will sue you in court, blaming you for damages, especially since I have a letter of clearance.” Mavis never received the 7 months’ salary Georges and Pascale owed her.

Thankfully, in Dubai where she now works, she is receiving her full salary every month.
