Abike claims Colonel Abbas threatened to kill her if she didn't sign a paper forfeiting her salary. She described him as telling her "he can not give me my money, that he has already bought me from Najah as a slave."

THE STORY
Abike, a 23 year old Nigerian, arrived in Lebanon on 15 October, 2019. Her first employers were Colonel Abbas Akil and his wife, Nivine Assaf.
Abike alleges that they did not give her sufficient food saying it was too expensive and that Nivine took Abike to clean her mother’s house and her mother’s neighbour’s house. In October, 2020 Abike contacted This Is Lebanon for help in getting the salary Colonel Akil owed her. He had paid her for 4.5 months of the 10 months she had worked for him. In August, 2020 Abike had asked to be returned to the agency as she was owed 5.5 months salary.
Far from receiving help, she alleges that at the agency she was given two choices: either return to Colonel Abbas and continue to work for free or sign a paper forfeiting all her rights to her unpaid salary. Abike refused to sign and claims she was threatened with physical abuse. Colonel Abbas also held her passport and told her he would not return it unless she signed.
According to Abike, Najah Traboulsi, the agent, is a close friend of Colonel Akil’s and she also threatened Abike with physical abuse. What could a vulnerable domestic worker do when faced with those choices from a Colonel in the Lebanese Armed Forces? Abike wrote:
“Abbas might kill me.... because he told me that if he killed me and people asked him why, he would accuse me of stealing. I am so scared right now.”
The Document Abike was forced to sign
She signed. The document she signed said, “I hereby leave Mr Abbas with my salary. I don’t want to have anything with Mr Abbas again."
Abike worked for her next employer for 6 months. This employer also withheld Abike's salary and refused to buy her basic items, like Vaseline, claiming they were too expensive. On 15 February, 2021, Abike ran to the Nigerian consulate. This employer shall remain nameless since she took Abike's passport to the Nigerian consulate at This Is Lebanon request.
Colonel Akil owes Abike $1,150 and the second employer owes her $300. We sent Colonel Akil the video Abike recorded and asked him to send us pictures of the salary he had paid her. We like to hear both sides of a story and wanted to hear his. He responded by sending us the picture of the paper Abike signed and wrote, “This a proof that habibat (sic) has no money with us and plz dont call me again.” We replied, “She is home now and wants the salary you owe her. If you paid her, please send pics of all the OMT receipts. As a senior person in government, we are sure you are aware that domestic workers must be paid at the end of every month and a receipt signed.” Colonel Akil blocked us.
Abike flew home to Nigeria on 27 February, 2021. This Is Lebanon used the funds collected through the #SendUsHome campaign to pay for her air ticket and PCR test.
Abike writes:
“I sold everything in order to travel to Lebanon and feed myself, I never know this is what I am going to face.”

وصلت أ.و.ج، النيجيرية الأصل والبالغة من العمر 23 عاماً، إلى لبنان في 15 تشرين الأول 2019. و كان صاحب العمل الأول العقيد عباس عقيل وزوجته نيفين عساف.
لم يقدّما لها طعاماً يكفيها قائلَين بأنه باهظ الثمن، على حد قول أ.و.ج، وقد أخذت نيفين أ.و.ج لتنظيف منزل والدتها ومنزل جارة والدتها. في تشرين الأول 2020، اتصلت بجمعية "هذا لبنان" تطلب المساعدة في الحصول على الرواتب التي يدين بها العقيد عقيل لها. كان قد دفع لها أجور 4 أشهر ونصف من أصل 10 أشهر عملت لديه فيها. وفي آب 2020، طلبت أ.و.ج إعادتها إلى الوكالة إذ كان مديناً لها برواتب 5 أشهر ونصف.
تقول أنها في الوكالة أُعطِيت خيارين: إما العودة إلى العقيد عباس والاستمرار في العمل مجاناً أو التوقيع على ورقة تتنازل فيها عن جميع حقوقها في رواتبها غير المدفوعة. رفضت أ.و.ج التوقيع وتم تهديدها بالتعنيف الجسدي. كما صادر العقيد عباس جواز سفرها وقال لها بأنه لن يعيده لها إلا إذا وقّعت.
وحسب قول أ.و.ج، فإن الوكيلة نجاح طرابلسي، وهي صديقة مقرّبة للعقيد عقيل، قد هددت أيضاً أ.و.ج بالتعنيف الجسدي. ماذا يمكن أن تفعل عاملة منزلية ضعيفة عندما يواجهها عقيد في الجيش اللبناني بهذه الخيارات؟ كتبت لنا أ.و.ج:
"قد يقتلني عباس .... لأنه أخبرني أنه إذا قتلني وسأله الناس عن السبب، فسوف يتهمني بالسرقة. إني خائفة جداً الآن".
فوقّعتْ. وتقول الوثيقة التي وقعتها: "إني أترك للسيد عباس رواتبي. لا أريد أن أحصل على أي شيء من السيد عباس مجدداً"
عملت أ.و.ج لدى صاحبة العمل الثانية لمدة 6 أشهر. والتي تمنّعت أيضاً عن دفع رواتب أ.و.ج ورفضت شراء حاجياتها الأساسية، مثل الفازلين، لأنها كانت باهظة الثمن. في 15 شباط 2021، هربت أ.و.ج إلى القنصلية النيجيرية. ستبقى صاحبة العمل مجهولة الهوية بما أنها سلّمت جواز سفر أ.و.ج إلى القنصلية النيجيرية بناء على طلب "هذا لبنان".
إن العقيد عقيل مدين للعاملة أ.و.ج بمبلغ 1150 دولار وصاحبة العمل الثانية مدينة لها بـمبلغ 300 دولار. أرسلنا للعقيد عقيل مقطع الفيديو الذي سجلته أ.و.ج وطلبنا منه أن يرسل لنا صوراً عن الرواتب الذي دفعها لها. فنحن نحب أن نسمع القصة من الطرفين وأردنا سماعها منه. رد بإرسال صورة الورقة الموقعة من أ.و.ج وكتب: "هذا دليل على أن حبيبة (كما كتب حرفياً) ليس لها مال لدينا، ومن فضلكم لا تتصلوا بي مرة أخرى." أجبناه: "إنها في بلدها الآن وتريد الرواتب الذي تدين بها لها. إذا كنت قد دفعت لها، يرجى إرسال صور لجميع إيصالات OMT. وبصفتك شخصاً بارزاً في الحكومة، فأنا متأكدة من إدراكك بأنه يجب دفع أجور عاملات المنازل في نهاية كل شهر بإيصال موقّع." فقام العقيد عقيل بحظرنا.
عادت أ.و.ج إلى نيجيريا في 27 شباط 2021. وقد دفع "هذا لبنان" ثمن تذكرة الطيران واختبار PCR .
كتبت أ.و.ج:
"لقد بعت كل شيء من أجل السفر إلى لبنان وإعالة نفسي، ولم أعرف أبداً أن هذا ما سأواجهه."
