Ali & Marwa Al Zein Use Accusation of Theft to Cover-Up 19 Months of Domestic Servitude
Ali, a smuggler, paid Naume $770 for 19.5 months work - $1.30 per day. Ali falsely accused her of theft to try to cover his non-payment of $3,300.

THE STORY
Naume Kavosa, Kenyan, contacted This Is Lebanon on 11 August 2020. She had been in Lebanon for 1 year 7 months and never been paid. She was very worried because her employers, Ali and Marwa Al Zein, were sending her home the next day with the promise they’d pay her in full before she left. She wrote:
“I gave him all the details to send the money but he has not given me the receipt yet. What can I do? Please help me.”
We advised her to get pictures of her employers and leave on the booked flight. With Lebanon in turmoil, the most important thing was to get home. Ali did send some of Naume’s salary. He gave her the Western Union receipt before she boarded but had torn it so the amount sent was not visible. When she arrived back in Kenya, she found that it was $770, instead of the $3800 she was owed.
Naume said her madam:
“treated me in a harsh way. I was not allowed to sleep for more than 6 hrs. All the cleaning and cooking I am the one who was doing it.”
According to Naume, her madam’s mother, Zainab, had an Ethiopian domestic worker who ran away in March 2020 because she was being abused and had received no salary for a year.
Naume was hospitalized on arrival in Kenya for surgery on her back.
This is Lebanon called Ali who said he had paid her $4000 by Western Union. We contacted Ali on WhatsApp and asked him to send a pic of the receipt. He saw the message but never responded.
Ali changes his story…
In January, 2021, a Lebanese negotiator called Ali. This time he said she remitted $600 in her first year and $1800 on the day she traveled. He accused her of theft of an iPhone 4, 165,000 LL, and 3 bottles of perfume.
He said Naume shared a bed with his daughter, making the point that she did not sleep on the floor. He also said he treated her like a daughter, not a maid. He said he smuggles cows from Syria into Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan and Qatar and pays no taxes. If you want to buy his smuggled meat, you can visit Al Hara Trading Butchery in Sidon.
It is clear from the phone calls with Ali that he contradicts himself. His story is inconsistent. Sadly, Naume will never receive the $3030 the Al Zeins owe her. It is also likely that there is, indeed, another domestic worker victimized by the same family who could have a false accusation of theft against her. It is possible she will end up in prison like many other victims of non-payment. In some ways, Naume was the lucky one.

اتصلت نعومي كافوسا، الكينية الأصل، بجمعية "هذا لبنان" في 11 آب 2020. كانت قد أمضت في لبنان مدة عام و 7 أشهر ولم تقبض أجورها مطلقاً. كانت قلقة للغاية لأن أصحاب العمل، علي ومروى الزين، كانوا سيرسلونها إلى بلدها في اليوم التالي مع وعد بأن يدفعوا لها بالكامل قبل مغادرتها. كتبت لنا:
"أعطيته كل المعلومات ليرسل المال لكنه لم يعطني الإيصال بعد. ماذا أفعل؟ أرجوكم ساعدوني."
نصحناها بالحصول على صور لأصحاب العمل والمغادرة على متن الرحلة التي تم الحجز فيها. ولأن لبنان في حالة اضطراب، كان أهم شيء هو العودة إلى الوطن. أرسل علي قسماً من راتب نعومي. فقد أعطاها إيصال ويسترن يونيون قبل صعودها إلى الطائرة، لكنه مزقه بحيث لم يكن المبلغ المرسَل ظاهراً. حين عادت إلى كينيا، وجدت أن المبلغ كان 770 دولاراً، بدلاً من مستحقاتها البالغة 3800 دولار.
قالت نعومي بأن سيدتها:
"إذ لم يكن مسموحاً لي بالنوم لأكثر من 6 ساعات. وكنت أقوم بكافة أعمال التنظيف والطبخ"
وحسب قول نعومي، فإن زينب، والدة سيدتها، كان لديها عاملة منزل أثيوبية هربت في آذار 2020 لأنها تعرضت للتعنيف، ولم تتقاضَ أي راتب لمدة عام.
دخلت نعومي المستشفى لدى وصولها إلى كينيا لإجراء عملية جراحية لظهرها.
اتصل "هذا لبنان" ب "علي" الذي قال أنه دفع لها 4000 دولاراً عن طريق ويسترن يونيون.
تواصلنا مع علي عبر واتسآب وطلبنا منه إرسال صورة للإيصال. فشاهد الرسالة ولم يرد.
يغير علي قصته...
في كانون الثاني 2021، اتصل مفاوض لبناني ب "علي". هذه المرة قال إنها حولت 600 دولار في عامها الأول و 1800 دولار في اليوم الذي سافرت فيه. اتهمها بسرقة iPhone 4 و 165000 ليرة لبنانية و 3 زجاجات عطر.
وقال إن نعومي تقاسمت السرير مع ابنته، محاولاً إثبات أنها لم تكن تنام على الأرض. أضاف بأنه عاملها كأنها ابنته وليس كخادمة. أخبرنا أنه يهرّب الأبقار من سوريا إلى لبنان والعراق والأردن وقطر ولا يدفع ضرائباً. فإذا كنتم ترغبون في شراء لحومه المهرّبة، بإمكانكم زيارة ملحمة الحارة التجارية في صيدا.
يتضح من المكالمات الهاتفية مع علي أنه يناقض نفسه. رواياته متضاربة. وللأسف، لن تتلقى نعومي مستحقاتها المالية 3030 دولاراً من عائلة الزين. ومن المحتمل أيضاً أن تكون هناك بالفعل عاملة منزل أخرى ضحية للعائلة نفسها التي يمكن أن توجّه إليها اتهاماً كاذباً بالسرقة. من الممكن أن ينتهي بها الأمر في السجن مثل العديد من ضحايا عدم دفع الأجور. بطريقة ما، كانت نعومي هي التي حالفها الحظ.
