Graziella claims that Muna doesn't want to go home and that she has been paid right up to next month - a month in advance. She claims Muna has been there 11 years (it's 15) and does no work.

THE STORY

This Is Lebanon demands the immediate release of Muna Giri, a 43-year-old Nepali, who has been enslaved by Antoine and Graziella Mouawad, Zgharta residents, since 2007.

Muna’s plight is similar to that of three other Nepalese who spent a decade imprisoned in their Lebanese employers’ homes: Salmo Muktan, Sajita Lama and BanMai Dong. Salmo and Sajita returned to Nepal in February 2022 after the intervention of This Is Lebanon and the Nepali consulate. BanMai is still inside her employers’ house.

Since 2017, This Is Lebanon has been brought in on behalf of thousands of migrant domestic workers who have been robbed of wages, enslaved and rendered prisoners of their employers. Muna’s case, which we only became aware of on 7 April, 2022, stands as the second worst case for enslavement; the staggering 15 years is second only to that of Nidzma, enslaved by the Hayek family in Nabatieh for 21 years.

Muna’s children were aged 11, 9, 5 and 2 when she left Nepal. During her enslavement in the Mouawad house she has missed her husband’s funeral, the wedding of her daughter - now 25, and the births of her two grandchildren - now aged 7 and 4.

Muna Giri's daughter Chitra

Following the publication of an article about Muna's life under slavery in Nepali media, her daughter Chitra contacted This is Lebanon asking us to take on her mother's case. We contacted Muna's employer Graziella to inquire about Muna. Graziella told us information that entirely contradicted Muna and her family's testimony. Graziella said that Muna had worked for them for 11 years instead of 15, that Muna did not carry out housework, and that she doesn't want to leave Lebanon. In addition, Graziella stated that Muna has been fully paid.

Dipendra Uprety, founder of This Is Lebanon, is from Nepal. He spoke to Muna to hear her side of the story. Muna is not allowed a phone so he spoke to her on Graziella’s phone. When asked if she wanted to return home to Nepal, she replied, “Of course I do! But how can I? I’ve been here 12 or 13 years.” It is not surprising that Muna has no accurate idea of how long she has been enslaved. She is illiterate, never goes out, has no contact with other Nepalese and has no phone. She said that even though she has worked for the Mouawads for all this time, she is penniless. When she asks the Mouawads to send her home, they tell her they have no money and her family must send the money for the air ticket. Poignantly, Muna said her employers told her if she leaves, she cannot even take her underpants with her as these belong to them. She is poorly clothed, does not have slippers for her feet, and is deprived of food and sleep.

When Dipendra questioned Muna on how much she had been paid, she said she had no idea and asked him to check with her daughter. “Brother, I have no idea what dollars look like and I haven’t been out since I got here.” When Graziella was asked about Western Union receipts, she said she only had the most recent one because, “Who keeps receipts?” Chitra says there are only 1-2 annual remittances for a few hundred dollars at a time over the years totaling about $7,000.

When asked if she was physically  abused, Muna said that her mister had beaten her twice but her madam has beaten her on a daily basis from the time that she arrived.

Muna Giri

She slaps, slaps, slaps me on the mouth frequently and pulls me by my ears.”

Employer Graziella Mouawad

Muna has no family or friends in Lebanon, her lack of contacts and acquaintances are primarily due to her confinement in the Mouawad home. Her passport has been taken away from her. The outside world in Lebanon remains completely foreign to her, although she has lived in the country since 2007. She has been living under horrific conditions amounting to forced labour, receiving little to no pay and cut off from the world.

This nightmare must not be allowed to continue. We call on our followers to campaign for an end to the confinement and enslavement of Muna Giri. Contact information for the family is available below. Join us in letting Antoine and Graziella Mouawad know that domestic servitude, forced labour and restrictions on freedom of movement are crimes under international law and that their decade and a half’s enslavement of Muna must end now.

Update 29 April, 2022

A former worker of Sandra, Graziella's daughter, who worked for her in 2013, sent this to us as a private message:

"Before I was there in Lebanon. My employer was her daughter Sandra. We were together in the house before, the Nepali doesn't know how to speak English but she make actions. She had no phone, I asked her if they send her salary every month but she said no. And if she call to her family in Nepal before 3 minutes they take the phone. One day I was in the kitchen, and the Nepali is with her madam Mouwad, her madam was angry with her. I saw her slap her face and mouth, one of her teeth broke, not totally broke but it's moving... And when I see that happen I was scared. When I had time to talk to her she told me in actions because the Nepali doesn't know how to speak English, she asked me to help her go to her agency but I said I don't know. Because I was new at that time.. When they went to their house in the mountains work work work and not enough foods.. She make slavery. 😭That's the reason why I left my employer Sandra, the daughter of madam Graziella. Because of her family, what if they also do that to me...

Muna was sent back to Nepal on Monday 25th April, the day before they had agreed to take her into the Nepali Consulate. They knew their crime of slavery had been discovered and got her out of the country as quickly as possible. They did not let her family in Nepal know until she had already departed. Muna's family live a full day's bus ride from Kathmandu. Her son, who hadn't seen his mother since he was 2 years old, scrambled to get to the airport in time to meet her but because he received the flight details too late, he missed his mother's arrival, adding to the trauma of both Muna and her son.

Now that Muna has her passport in her own possession, we have been able to ascertain that she arrived in Lebanon on 21 February, 2007. This means she was enslaved for 15 years 2 months.

The Mouawads have continued their lies in comments on our social media platforms. Someone by the name of Danielle Mouawad Boustany (with no posts on her IG page) commented:

"From legal perspective :

Staying more than 15 years in this house means at least 12 renewal work agreements which means at least 12 opportunities to “free herself”.

From logical perspective :

Torturing a maid for more than 15 years would have created extensive rumor talks at least in the closed neighbor surroundings.

From common sense approach :

When all of these village residents who know this family are sharing completely opposite views to what this lady is pretending, the end result is so clear.

To the : “This is Lebanon “ Team:

would you please help me answer the below questions:

1- Is it true that this lady’s daughter “Kelly Giri“ (the one who recorded and sent the videos) has stabbed her employer in Malaysia and moved to Dubai with a counterfeit of a passport with a modified name “Chitra Giri”

2- According to human rights: “blackmailing is more effective than bribery “ how can you explain the phone calls for money to delete the post.

3- How can you correct and make up for the moral and potential physical damage the family is going through if all the story above was made up on false data and all transactions done were displayed.

These are our responses to her questions:

1. The allegations you have raised against Muna's daughter are unfounded. We have seen documentation from her childhood with her full name being Chitra Kala Giri. Regardless, this is not about Chitra, this is about Muna's 15 years of living in slavery conditions.

2. No such demands were made. We refuse to act even as intermediaries in the transfer of money to a worker. Our negotiator made one call on 8th April which was recorded.

3. Please see the information outlined in the article to understand the extent of the horrors lived by Muna. Forced Labour is a form of slavery under international law and is a crime. Muna's missing teeth and marks and scars on her body tell a story stronger than words.

And now we have some questions for the Mouawads. Could you please explain why Muna's teeth are broken if she was treated as "one of the family" as is being claimed? (see pic above). Why does she have scars all over her body - as attested to by a forensic doctor in Nepal?

If, as is claimed by one Gina Mouawad, Muna wanted "to save money for herself and wanted to stay", where is all the money? If she didn't want to spend it on her 4 fatherless children and was saving it for herself, why did she only return with $700?
